March 21, 2012 Storm Chase

Chaser: David Reimer
Video/Photo Summary: Showers and a few thunderstorms formed in what is called a Cold Core Setup. Very cold air in the mid-levels of the atmosphere allows for instability in the atmosphere, even if surface temperatures are near 60°F. These storms are usually low-topped (meaning they don’t extend very far up into the atmosphere) and usually have the potential to produce copious amounts of hail and funnel clouds. On a rare occasion, these funnel clouds can briefly touch the ground and become brief, but weak tornadoes. Seeing the opportunity and having nothing else to do, David ventured into Southern Oklahoma for the afternoon.
