Spring invades Texas!

If you live anywhere in the Southern United States, you know that spring is in the air! Here in Texas, temperatures across the state are averaging between 75°F and 85°F with clear, crystal blue skies! The main box along with the bottom-left box show surface temperatures at 4 PM CDT across Texas. It’s good to see those warm colors! The top-left box shows our surface dewpoint values, which is a measure of how much moisture is in the air. Notice the brown colors (depicting) dry air in West Texas. Dewpoint values near Amarillo are in the teens, making for very dry conditions. Since the temperature-dewpoint spread is so high, relative humidity values are very low. This creates a high danger of grass fires! This warm weather will continue all week.

Texas Storm Chasers’ David Reimer and Jenny Brown, along with Chelsea Burnett, ventured out to Louisiana for a marginal severe weather setup. Weather models were advertising very favorable wind shear for supercells and tornadoes, but a weak capping inversion allowed for widespread precipitation. The said precipitation kept instability amounts down to a minimal and prevented more then brief low level circulations through the afternoon. Combined with horrible chasing terrain and poor data coverage, this chase ended up being nothing more then a drive out in the rain. That said, we were treated to an amazing sunset on the way back to Texas and had dinner with several other chasers in Canton, TX.
