Southeast Texas Faces Conditional Tornado Risk Today

November will be going out on the active side weather-wise in Texas. A conditional threat for scattered severe storms with a tornado risk will exist late this morning through the afternoon in the Coastal Plains, Brazos Valley, Southeast Texas, into the Golden Triangle. Today’s most likely time window will be between 11 AM and 6 PM, though there’s a chance it may go a bit later in the Golden Triangle (Beaumont area).

Today's severe weather outlook from the Storm Prediction Center. The highest threat for scattered severe storms will be across the Brazos Valley, Coastal Plains, Southeast Texas, east into the Golden Triangle. A much lower risk for hail and gusty winds may exist in North Texas, Texoma, and the Ark-La-Tex.

Today's tornado outlook from the Storm Prediction Center. The highest threat of a few tornadoes will be across the Brazos Valley, Coastal Plains, Southeast Texas, east into the Golden Triangle. A more stable low-level airmass should preclude tornadoes farther north; even though there will be plenty of rain and storms.

It isn’t a guarantee we’ll see issues with tornadoes today, but the threat is certainly there – especially if the low levels of the atmosphere can destabilize. Showers and storms are likely this afternoon into this evening across the eastern third of Texas, with the chance for rain and perhaps a rain/snow mix in the Texas Panhandle. Only minor snow accumulations, if any, are expected this afternoon.Forecast rain totals across Texas through Saturday. One to two inches of rain is possible in the Ark-La-Tex, East Texas, Piney Woods, and Southeast Texas. Two to five inches of rain may fall along the immediate Upper Texas Coast and Golden Triangle. Rain totals near one-half inch are possible along/east of I-35 from Gainesville, D/FW, to Austin. Rain totals drop off quickly west of I-35; though some rain/snow this afternoon may drop up to one-tenth of accumulation in the Panhandle.

We may see brief periods of heavier rains for the eastern third of Texas. The threat of stronger storms will be highest closer to the Upper Texas Gulf Coast. Storms with a localized flooding threat may continue into Friday morning across the Upper Texas Coast and the Golden Triangle.

After rains exit Texas on Friday, we’ll see several days of mostly dry weather to start off December across Texas. High temperatures over the next five days will average from the upper 50s into the middle 70s. Today will be cold in the Panhandle, with highs in the 30s and 40s, while the Rio Grande Valley will top out in the middle 80s.

Most of Texas hasn’t seen a spit of rain this month. Nothing lion about it for anyone west of Dallas
