Quiet Weather Expected Through Thursday – Weekend Brings Widespread Rain & Possibly Some Winter Weather In The Panhandle

Mostly quiet weather returns to the forecast through Thursday, after which, our next upper level system arrives bringing chances for widespread rain, cooler weather…and perhaps the first snow of the season for some folks in the panhandle.  Today’s Pacific cold front has pushed through most of the state, stalling along the upper coast this evening. Unfortunately, it won’t stay put for long and will begin to move back north tomorrow as a warm front bringing scattered chances for rain for portions of southeast Texas by tomorrow afternoon.  By Wednesday though, we’ll see a reinforcing cold front arrive.  This second front will push drier air into the southern half of the state which will remain in place through Thursday.  Aside from the aforementioned scattered showers Tuesday for southeast Texas, the remainder of the state will see mostly sunny and rain-free conditions through Thursday, with chances for rain returning on Friday.

For tonight, lows will be chilly but still a few degrees above seasonal averages despite today’s frontal passage.  For tomorrow, highs across the western half of the state will remain chilly and below normal for this time of the year, while central and eastern regions will see pleasant highs in the mid to upper 70s which are a few degrees above normal for this time of the year.

Jumping ahead to next weekend and the potential for snow…the forecast will continue to evolve this week, but as things stand right now, we’re looking at widespread rainfall both Saturday and Sunday across much of the state as an upper level low develops to our west later this week and potentially hangs around for a few days.  In addition to the upper level low developing out west, we will likely see a cold front arrive across the panhandle and potentially the northern half of the state sometime on Friday.  Whether or not it will be cold enough for some snow across the panhandle region is yet to be determined.  Some forecast models are showing a light snow for the panhandle region late Friday into Saturday; however, the forecast models may be overdoing the amount of cold air that actually makes it this far south.  The fact that there’s very little snow covering the ground across the central and high plains at the moment, and the temperatures have been warmer across those regions than we typically see by this late in the month, it’s reasonable to bet we won’t be quite as cold as current models are forecasting.  At any rate, snowfall for Amarillo northward is probably a pretty safe bet.  Anywhere south of Amarillo may not get quite cold enough to see snow.  We’ll have more updates out better forecast data arrives later in the week, so be sure to check back!
