Widespread Periods of Heavy Rainfall Continue This Weekend

Widespread rainfall and chilly temperatures remain in the forecast for this weekend and will likely continue through Monday as well.  An upper level low over northern Mexico will continue to provide lift across the state as a coastal low continues to help feed a continuous flow of moisture northward.  This rainfall will not be continuous, but will come in waves…with the first wave moving into the eastern half of the state with the second wave developing on its heels.  Snow chances will taper off across the panhandle region this morning with mostly rain expected this afternoon.  Chances for flurries or light snow return later this evening, but no major impacts are expected.  Below is a look at the latest animated model forecast for rainfall today through 8pm.

The heaviest rainfall today and through Sunday is expected across the central and southern half of the state…particularly for southeast Texas which is in closer proximity to a surface low just off the coast.  Flash Flood Watches are in effect for numerous counties across southeast Texas until Sunday evening with total rainfall exceeding 8 inches likely for this event.  This includes Houston/Galveston, Beaumont and Port Arthur. A daily rainfall record of 3.39 inches has already been recorded this morning at Galveston (Scholes Field), and with more on the way, we’re sure to see more record rainfall before this rain event comes to an end on Monday.  Needless to say, very messy conditions are expected to continue, especially for normally flood prone areas.  Be extra cautious driving today and overnight.  Do not drive past flood barricades and try to limit travel in areas known to easily flood.

Highs today across many areas have already been reached and temperatures will slowly drop as we head into the afternoon hours.  If you like warm weather, looks like the place to be today will be in far south Texas which will see their highs reach into the low to mid 80s this afternoon.  Elsewhere…very chilly and feeling very much like a winter day, especially across the panhandle region which will struggle to see 40 degrees.
